L’histoire de l’ombre is that of the dismantling of a player piano from the beginning of the 20th century. In a search that sometimes appears to be reverse engineering, the artist and composer Philippe Battikha extracts the internal components of the instrument and diverts them from their primary function. These become paintings, sculptures, mobiles, automated devices, etc. The piano, which appears functional, activates its keys when the presence of visitors is detected. Made "intelligent" but devoid of its original function of playing notes, it becomes a shadow of itself, playing musicless keys. However, recordings taken from its "silencing" - unbolting, unhinging, uncompressing, undoing - constitute the soundscape of this installation which is both inventive and informative.
L’histoire de l'ombre est celle du démantèlement d’un piano mécanique du début du XXe siècle. Dans une recherche qui s’apparente parfois à la rétro-ingénierie, l’artiste et compositeur Philippe Battikha soustrait les composantes internes de l’instrument et les détourne de leur fonction première. Celles-ci deviennent tableau, sculpture, mobile, dispositif automatisé, etc. Le piano, d’apparence fonctionnel, actionne ses touches lorsque la présence des visiteurs est détectée. Rendu «intelligent» mais dépourvu de son mécanisme d’origine, il n’est plus que l’ombre de lui-même et ne joue plus de notes.Toutefois, des enregistrements tirés de sa «mise au silence» - déboulonnage, décoinçage, décollage, découpage - constituent l’ambiance sonore de cette installation à la fois inventive et informative.
